5 out of 5 stars A GLIMPSE OF AN EPIC   December 4, 2007
This is a compilation of the 1700 most important couplets of Yoga Vasishtha, with a very competent translation of their meaning.

The compilation is by Swami Jnanananda Bharati, a Sanskrit Scholar of the Shankara tradition. The translation is by an otherwise unidentified Samvid. [Is s/he V. Vijayalakshmi, the copyright holder?]

This is not, like the Laghu Yoga-Vasishtha, a selection of 6000 couplets, but rather an intense abridgement, As Samvid puts it: it is "a marvel of condensation. All the essential teachings ... have been condensed almost in the words of the original ... without sacrificing clarity."

It is indeed a marvel, when you consider that the original work is about 35,000 couplets in length. That is an Epic; these 1700 couplets are an important glimpse.

As a lifetime devotee of this great work, I am currently engaged in an unabridged translation, available at yoga-vasishtha googlegroup.com, as an ongoing project.

You may suppose that my praise of this pretty book is sincere.

The text is clean and easy to read. The Sanskrit is wonderfully easy to read. Unfortunately there is no transliteration, but you will enjoy the Devanagari if you can.

Samvid's translation contains "the sense and spirit of the original" in a literal translation, which has not much of the poetry of the original epic, but gives an occasional glimpse.
