The Glass Castle, is one of the best books I have read in recent years. It not only is an interesting account of a girls life, but it gives you a totally different insight into a dysfunctional family. I have shared this book with most of my reader friends, and they have all said the same thing. Most of us have a hard time imagining a life like this. Makes you a little ashamed of the things you normally complain about.

I decided to read this book for a school project; after reading the first few pages, I was hooked. Immediately the story drew me in, and I could not seem to put it down. The writing was so detailed, so genuine, so heartfelt... I found myself becoming incredibly attached to the Walls family as I read. This book made me laugh, cry, and gasp (often all at once). Reading it right around thanksgiving as I did, I found it a very appropriate read for the time, as the holiday season approaches; this book is sure to warm your heart, despite the many challenges this family faced! I was very ignorant of the state in which so many people even in the U.S. live at this very moment -- I knew that many are homeless, but I had never imagined the trials the Walls family endured -- and The Glass Castle certainly opened my eyes to the fact that there is so much that we could be doing to help out others in need.
My favorite memoir December 9, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I prefer to read memoirs and true stories. This book is my favorite one and I have recommended to friends, and so far all of them loved it. I just sent a copy to my sister in CA.

(I've never seen a book with so many reviews.)
It was a difficult but important read for me because I'm writing my own memoir about a difficult childhood, and the rawness of the depicted neglect brought back painful memories. At least Jeanette had parents; mine left me in an orphanage where children were tortured.
Mostly I read it on the subway, BART, a few pages at a time, but sometimes a full chapter, alone in my apartment. In the process I felt a bond with Jeannette and her siblings--unilateral as it was. Envy was there too. Those parents seemed really interesting.
Thank you, Jeannette, for sharing a powerful story in such an intimate, clear, compassionate, accessible manner and for lighting the way for others.

I think this book tells an amazing story about an amazing woman. I recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys biographic books.
