"the untethered soul" the Journey beyond yourself by Michael A. Singer August 20, 2008 This book is a mystical journey beyond the physical self, past the the idea of thought and even our emotional selves. It brought me to the very core of my existance. I can view existance in a way that I never could before and use this experience as a tool in my everday life to help me experience all facets of life in a powerful and most postive way. I am able to experience even lifes' most extreme curves with extreme happiness, peace, Joy, and vibrancy that I never knew I had access to. Michael A Singer is an excellent teacher and is giving one of life's most powerful mysteries away for the price of a book. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by reading this book. It is a must have for all who are still searching for the most Powerful Love, Truth, Peace, and Joy that existance has to offer.
Thought it was Fantastic until July 22, 2008 17 out of 25 found this review helpful
I actually enjoyed reading the first half of this book. It is easy to follow, it does have some very compelling insights. The two points I couldn't get past, though, were: 1.He stresses how our thoughts have no impact what-so-ever on our world as we know it. I'm pretty sure we all know that isn't true at all. 2. He later writes an entire chapter on "Being happy no matter what". He states, over and over, that there is nothing that can happen to us that we can't decide to just be happy all the while it's happening. He says this is true enlightenment, but my opinion is that we were given emotions as a gift, and experiencing the highs and lows of life is part of the process of growth. Without sadness as it's opposite, we would have no idea what bliss feels like. I realize many will disagree with me, but I just don't believe numbing myself to life is anything to strive for. I stopped reading the book after this chapter, perhaps I'll pick it up again later-perhaps not.
Thank You Sir July 13, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've read my share of spiritual guidance; from D.T. Suzuki, right on up through Eckhardt Tolle, and I've also sat before a number of today's popular teachers. There is nothing else like this to be found.
It's the keys to the castle... an operations manual for the human psyche. He is offering the naked truth, the 'nuts and bolts' if you will, of spiritual work and awakening as it has never been put forth in English. It's that simple. It's not been said like this before. Suffer an archery metaphor...all other such works: plenty of hits to the target and vicinity! Wonderful, thanks so much! This book: an arrow splitting the arrow, that split the arrow, that hit dead center...and nothing but this kind of purity and truth, cover to cover. With regard to any less than glowing reviews of this book, I would merely cite the metaphor of seed falling on rocky, infertile soil. We can recieve from the universe only that which we are ripe for, what our strictures or lack thereof will allow.
There's nothing complicated or debatable here. All vagueness and obscurity are stripped away and the meaning laid bare, leaving us face to face with its ancient message, the core truths of egoic existence, consciousness and freedom. Get this book and be pointed to the truth of yourself like never before. The story is one you already know somewhere within, but need nonetheless to be taught. The synthesizing, integrating and revealing is all done for you. Now just apply it, do the work...live it...find truth...awaken from the trance.
As a teacher from whom I've learned has said, awakening is one thing, but the ability to then transmit to others is a gift unto itself. One does not imply the other. Here is that gift. If spiritual communication can be likened to the sounding of a bell, this one is ringing with the most penetrating clarity. Beyond it lies the implementing, leaving it and all other vehicles aside and stepping through the door or doors for oneself. Thank you Mr. Singer.
P.S. I know this review is way over the top, but I really can't imagine saying too much for this book and what he's acomplished in this feat of communication and instruction. The truth is the truth is the truth. Saints and mystics taste of spiritual truth. Many have written of it as well, but have they then spoken of it in a way that will bring you an inch closer? Do they make you feel you are standing on the same plane, or does it all seem of another realm? You can be sure that whatever you yourself will know of truth, you will know from the place you currently inhabit, warts and all. Such is the place where this book will meet you. Make no mistake, after reading it, the work is there to be done, of course. Your grasp of things however, will become so much clearer. It will then be less a question of knowing the path, and much more a question of 'Are you willing to walk it?' As he and so many others have said, one must be willing to pay any price for freedom. It can't be one thing on your list of wants, it has to be top, bottom & everything in between. Until that time we'll keep each other company on the hampster wheel.
The Untethered Soul July 5, 2008 I gave this book to all of my friends. Singer gives the reader perspective to "let go of the little things" and truly live in the moment. Now to put it into practice...
What a gift this book is to the seeker! June 22, 2008 The search for Truth can be so convoluted, so complex, and yet, Michael Singer points out that it is rather simple. Truth transcends dogma, creed, relentless searching and, most importantly its source is within us, waiting for simple choices to be made. This elegantly simple book presented itself to me when I was looking for a different book, and after reading the first paragraph of the first chapter I bought it. It is laser-like in its focus and clarity. His prose is simple, direct and practical.
One of the teachings of Buddhism is that "When the student is ready to learn, the teacher will appear." Perhaps that is why this book stands out for me--it was a message I was ready to hear, and its transformative power is remarkable. There are no elaborate skills to master here--you just keep returning to the simple lessons he provides and in a short period of time you feel deep changes taking place. He explains how the psyche works, why we do the self destructive things we do, and how we untangle the intricate web of false assumptions we operate out of that keep us in fear, anxiety and confusion.
Notice all of the 5-Star ratings. This is one to read over and over again...
